How to Brew Tea Like a Herbalist

Originally, the word Tea, referred to a particular plant (Camellia sinensis), but is now distinguished by the public as being black, green, or herbal.In general, tea is ingested for pleasure and enjoyment.  Did you know that the word “chai” actually means tea?

In herbalism “tea” refers to any number of plants submerged in water, usually in larger doses than commercial tea bags offer.  These teas are used therapeutically to help bring the body to better balance.  Once you get used to drinking herbal teas, you will never be able to buy boxed teas in little tea bags again!  First of all,  herbalists generally use a lot more plant material, more often, and we are very particular about the quality.  We enjoy being able to see the shapes, smells, and colors of the plants we are choosing to put into our teas.

Basic Directions for Brewing Herbal Teas

Aboveground parts (Leaves and Flowers) 1 heaping tablespoon of herbs per 8-10 oz of.  Boil water and pour hot water over tea. Let steep for 20 minutes. Strain and enjoy.

Belowground parts (Fruits, Roots, and Barks) 1 teaspoon of herbs per 8-10 oz of water.  Simmer for 20 minutes. Strain and enjoy.

Teas last about 2 days if preserved in the fridge.  You can make bigger batches and heat as desired.  There are a variety of ways to make teas, but this one will get you started.  The most important thing to do is start to make them regularly.
